Ruined entrance grave excavated August-September 1984. The cairn was circular, 5m diameter and marked by a kerb of 18 granite slabs. Within the circle was a rectangular chamber with its entrance to the east. The chamber was roofed by large capstones. The area between kerb and chamber was filled with stones up to the height of the capstones. What is described as the primary deposition was found intact near the entrance , consisting of crushed cremated bone, "burnt soil", charcoal and potsherds, from a pit of "what seems to be the west Cornish late Neolithoc and co-Beaker coarse ware". The chamber entrance B described as having been "ritually blocked" by portal stones but only to a level which still allowed vision into the chamber. The cairn is closely associated with the remains of a cultivation terrace within a well preserved field system. [see also SW 43 SW 99] and a settlement of a dozen huts. The cairn has been partially restored. (4,5)
The cairn was probably no more than 1.5m high when complete, possibly with visible capstones and the kerb about 1-1.2m high. (6) |
