More information : SW 43752455. Approximate site of part of stone circle. (1) There is no trace of any part of a stone circle. The field has been cleared and cultivated and on adjacent hedge has been effaced. Many massive boulders have been pushed against the surviving field hedges. (2) Russell (1) notes two stone circles in St Buryan recorded by Borlase (1740) - Boleigh and Tregurnow - which she seems to regard as one and the same site. Russell only provides an NGR, for Tregurnow, although she surrounds it with question marks and it is not clear where she got it from. Using the same references, Barnatt (3) sites Boleigh circle at SW 4314 2444 and states that it stood a short distance to the WSW of Merry Maidens (record 422900). Boleigh circle had a diameter of `30 paces' and consisted of 7 stones, 4 still upright in the 18th century. It seems to have been destroyed later than 1861. (3)
Tregurnow stone circle is thought to have stood at SW 4375 2455, where until 2006 two stones were stood. See record XXX (4) |
