Summary : Bronze Age standing stone leaning out from a hedge is located circa 400 metres west of Nine Maidens Circle. It was excavated in 1871, but only one pebble was found. The stone is commonly known locally as Gun Rith. it is a Scheduled Monument.
More information : [SW4293 2447] Long Stone [OE] (1) Three or four hundred yards west of the Nine Maidens Circle (SW 42 SW 1) stands a pillar 10' 6" above the ground. In appearance it is slim and tapering. 'It stands in a hedge adjoining the 'Goon Rith' or Red Downs.. Nothing remarkable was found on carefully digging round it. (2) This standing stone is 0.6m square near the base and 3.0m high. Ground photograph: See AO/60/368/5 (From the SE). (3) Standing Stone (NR) (4) Standing stone in hedge excavated in 1871 but only one pebble found. (5) Scheduled under Megalithic Monuments. (6) This standing stone which is as described now leans out from the hedge. Published 1/2500 survey correct. (7) The stone is commonly known as "Gun Ritth". (8)
