More information : SW 4217 2693] LONG STONE [OE] (1) Monumental pillar at Treleu, St. Buryan. Height 10 ft. (2) On the farm of Trelew on the summit of a hill stands a stone 13 1/2' in height, 3' being buried in the ground. "On 7th March 1871 a pit was sunk on the N. side of this stone.... Three feet below the surface of the field (there was no mound) lay a deposit of splintered bones.....strongly cemented together..... Among them were found charred wood, a small chip of flint subjected to great heat, and a piece of very rudely-baked clay, of a reddish colour, 2" in diamter, and shaped like a stopper or plug. The deposit was 3' from the base of the pilar; a good deal of fine clay surrounded the bones but they were protected by no side or covering stone, and.....had been placed in the side of the pit excavated to receive the monolith." [The writer sites this antiquity 1/2 mile west of the Pridden stone [Corn 73 S.E.18], but it is doubtful whether the stone shown in that position on O.S.6" is on the farm of Trelew and Borlase is known to have made similar errors. The stone 1/2m. East of Pridden has therefore been accepted.] (3) The stone at SW 42172693 is that referred to by Borlase. The stone 3.0m. high is of wedge-like section and at the base its sides measure 0.4m., 0.9m., 0.8m. and 1.0m. Ground photograph: see AO/60/341/4 (from the north). (4) Standing Stone(NR) (5) Listed. (6) This impressive standing stone is as described. Published 1/2500 survey correct. (7)
