Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 422326

Hob Uid: 422326
Location :
Cornwall
Sancreed
Grid Ref : SW4049029530
Summary : The remains of a probable hut circle visible as a circular earth bank lined with large stones. It is approximately 6 metres in diameter with a level interior.
More information : Ring barrow on the brow of the hill just behind Grumbla
consisting of a circular earth bank lined inside and out by big
stones (only a few now in situ). "A large flat stone in the
centre probably covers the kist".
[Area sited, from small scale map, at SW 40452955.]
"In the croft just below this " is a slab of rock set on edge and
apparently artificially errected. "It might well have formed the
support of a huge cromlech".(1)

The feature described as a ring barrow by Henderson is at
SW 40492948. It is 8.0m. in diameter and the interior is 0.6m.
below ground level on the higher south side. The north side is
bounded by large stones set on edge but the south side appears
only a semi-circular 'scoop' in the hillside. Near the centre
of the interior is lying a flat stone measuring 1.0m. x 0.6m.
The identification as a ring barrow is considered uncertain.
There is a possibility that it is a hut circle although no entrance
could be discovered. An old field bank, low and spread, runs down
from the south into the western perimeter of the feature.
The erect stone mentioned by Henderson is 50.0m. to the north, at
SW 40492953. Oriented SW-NE, the stone is 3.0m. long, 1.8m. high
and up to 0.7m. thick. There is much loose rock and outcrop in
this area and another, smaller erect stone stands a little to
the west. These two erect stones and another five, smaller,
prostrate stones form a roughly circular figure about 8.0m.
across but this could not be certainly identified as the retaining
circle of a barrow.
A 25" survey has been made. (2)

Miss Russell is of the opinion that Henderson's 'Ring Barrow' is
a hut circle and that the other feature is the remains of a
barrow. (3)

SW 40492948) Hut Circle (NR) (4)

SW 40502955. Part of a barrow retaining wall of very large stones. (5)

Approximately SW 40452957. Barrow (or site of) listed. (5a)

"A" SW40492948. This circular vegetation-covered feature almost
certainly represents the remains of a hut circle. It is situated
just off the crest of a fairly steep north-facing slope in
reclaimed ground and is scooped into the slope. The internal
diameter measures 6.0m and there are 0.4m high back and 0.5m
high front scarps. The wall, 1.1m wide and double-faced in places,
is constructed of moorland boulders with small stone infill (on
the uphill side) and stone and earth (on the downhill side). The
position of the entrance is not clear and the level interior is
covered with stones. The field bank on the west side (2) and the
field hedge on the downhill (north side) have been effaced.
"B" SW40482954. This circular structure constructed of boulders
and stones is now difficult to classify because of its ruinous
condition however it shares similar constructional features with
its neighbour and may prove to be a hut circle rather than a
barrow.
It lies on a fairly steep slope and is scooped into the hillside.
The level interior is very approximately 6.0m in diameter and
the front and back scarps are 0.6m and 0.7m high respectively.
Many stones and slabs, some with evidence of stone splitting,
lie haphazardly across the site but two large slabs, one 3.7m wide
and 1.9m high and the second 1.5m wide and 1.4m high along with a
few other small slabs form fragmentary wall. A turf-covered
boulder/stone bank 0.4m high lies along the top of the backscarp.
Surveyed at 1/2500. (6)
