Summary : 15th century hospitium adjoining the gateway of Battle Abbey. The earliest hospitium was recorded in 1076, probably accomodating pilgrims. Dissolved in 1538.
More information : (Area TQ 748 158) Outside the 14thc gateway of Battle Abbey (TQ 71 NW 5) is a timber-framed building still known as the Hospital, which no doubt accommodated travellers. Whether this was the site of the original hospitium, or whether, as was more usual, there was a guest hall attached to the gate, is not certain. (1)

Founded c1076. Later dedicated to St Thomas M. Dissolved 1538. (2)

TQ7480 1579. A 15thc (a) building in good condition, now known as the Original Pilgrims Rest.

Rest)

C.15 timber-framed house consisting of a recessed centre and 2 wings with their first fl. overhanging on the protruding ends of the fl. joists. The whole front is close studded except the North wing which is wholly plastered on the ground floor and above has squares of plaster infiling with some timbering. The South wing has curved braces on the first fl. The centre has coved eaves, the upper ends of the studs being curved to form it, and a cruved brace on the South side of the recess. Casement ws. and one oriel w. of 6 lights with transom on the first fl. Pointed doorway with original iron-studded door. (4)
