Summary : The remaining part of a large brick courtyard house built or rebuilt by Sir William Petre between the years 1539 and 1566. In the 18th century the gatehouse and stable buildings were rebuilt. Between 1799 and 1819 the west range containing the Great Hall was demolished leaving the courtyard open. A few small additions were made to the existing building in the 18th and 19th century. In the C20 there has been a considerable amount of restoration. |
More information : (TQ 65409852) Ingatestone Hall (NR) (1) Built or re-built probably by Sir W. Petrie, circa mid 16th century with additions late 16th and 18th centuries. Modern chapel probably replaces an earlier one on same site. Late 16th century barn 100 yards north west of Hall at TQ 65299862. (Scheduled) (2) Ingatestone Hall (name confirmed) is an outstanding 16th century building. The house and barn are as described. Published survey 1:2,500 correct. (3)
