More information : In 1797 a Roman altar was found 6 feet below the surface in clearing away some earth for improving and enlarging the castle [at LANCASTER]. It is now found a little distance muthant the old wall, between ADRIAN'S TOWER [LANCS.30SE 4.2] and the great square one of saseon [?] architctural. Inscription reads:- DEO DEO SANCTO MARTI SANCO MARTI COCIDIO VIBINIVS COCIDIO,VIBINIUS LVCIVS. BF. COS LUCIUS B(ENE)F(ICIARIUS)CO(N)S(ULIS) V. S. L. M. V(OTUM)S(OLVIT)L(IBENS) M(ERITO) The altar is now preserved at the head of one of the staircases in the Assize court at LANCASTER CASTLE. (1) SD 47346181. The approx. position where this altar was found lies between the old curtain wall and the new castle wall in an area occupied by prison building between HADRIAN'S TOWER. (LANCS.30SE4.6) and the site of the DUNGEON TOWER (LANCS,30SE4.7). It is now preserved in HADRIANS TOWER in LANCASTER Castle. (2)
