More information : (TQ 5548 5868) St. Edith's Well (NAT) (1) St. Edith's Well in the centre of Kemsing village is said to have healing properties. The stone enclosure walls are modern but the stonework lining the well itself is probably medieval. (2) St. Edith's Well is as described above and is maintained in good condition. A nearby plaque carries the following notice. "St. Edith of Kemsing 961-984. This well lay within the precincts of the Covent where St. Edith, daughter of King Edgar, passed her childhood. Hallowed by her presence, its waters became a source of healing". No documentary evidence has been found to support the claim for the Convent at Kemsing. "The Chapel of St. Edith the virgin, is mentioned in an Otford will of 1419". (3) Not mentioned in The Buildings of England. (4) Additional bibliography - not consulted. (5)
