MONUMENT NO. 408132

DESCRIPTION + /

Site of a Roman villa discovered in 1715 during the planting of a tree avenue in Wanstead Park. The mosaic was not completely uncovered and no plan of it seems to exist. It was said to have consisted of a man on horseback bordered with a wreath style pattern. South of the pavement, brick foundations were said to have been found. More Roman finds have been subsequently recovered in this area, either by accident or excavation, but no more structural remains have been found. This villa may have had an associated mausoleum (record 408112).
