Summary : Dorset House, formerly Salisbury House. This was an official residence and inn of the Bishops of Salisbury, who had owned land here since the 12th century. The house was often used by visiting royalty. In 1564 it was purchased by Richard ackville, , the Sackvilles being created Earls of Dorset in 1603, and renamed Dorset House. Burnt in the Great Fire and not rebuilt.
