A house of the Knights Templars stood at the Holborn end of
Chancery Lane. It was almost certainly founded by Hugh de
Payensk, master of the Order, when he visited England in
1128, and it became the head house of the Order in England. It
was moved to the New Temple, off Fleet Street, in 1161, or
1184. (see TQ38 SW 344).
