St Mary Overy Priory

Hob Uid: 404709
Location :
Greater London Authority
Southwark
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : TQ3268080330
Summary : Late Saxon minster reformed as an Augustinian Priory. The minster was allegedly founded on the site of a nunnery. It was reformed circa 1100 and there is no sign that any of the rights of the minster were retained by the reformed monastery. The monastery was dissolved in 1539. The minster was probably founded as a burghal minster either late in Alfred's reign or in the earlier part of Edward the Elder's, and probably succeeded the minster of Bermondsey.
