More information : [TQ 36957588] Site of a Monastic Building [A.T.] (12th Century) [Three sides of a building shown. These are almost certainly represented on O.S. 1/1250 1962 by a 'square' of pecks in front of some modern houses.] [O.N.B. Destroyed]
Small Premonstratensian abbey founded at Brockley, Kent, before 1182. Moved to Bayham, Sussex 1199-1208. [See TQ 63 NE 5]. The supposed site of the monastery was some grassy mounds on Manor Farm, Deptford, close to St. Peter's Church Brockley (consecrated 1870). A well discovered during the building of the church is supposed to have belonged to the monastery whilst excavation of the mounds revealed the foundations of a building, the refectory 34 1/2 ft. by 21 1/2 ft with a recess 10 ft. by 9 1/2 ft at the north-east end and an entrance on the south-west side. The floor had originally been laid with large red tiles. Coins dating from Edward IV and later were found. [The coins suggest a much later building, ? 15th Cent.]
