Summary : Hospital founded in 1189 by Odo de Dammartin, becoming an Augustinian Priory in 1218, dissolved in 1538. It was never a large priory. Minor excavations have possibly located the cloister, and 14th century coffin lids have been recovered.
More information : [TQ 3777 5236] ST. JAMES PRIORY [G.T.] (Site of)

There are no remains of St. James's Priory apart from about 12 ft. frontage under the bushes between the modern 'Priory' and the second pond, within which are remains of a flooring of lime and sand; but this may date subsequently to the destruction of the Priory. A fragment of 14th c. capital from a window is preserved at the modern house and on the brow of the hill beyond the ponds are some large masses of unwrought stone and a piece of cornice. Ornamental paving-tiles have been found and below the bushes many human bones were unearthed during an excavation (a) of what is considered to be the site of the cloister and in consequence abandoned. The broken remains of two coffinlids, one 14th c., are still there (2).

Tandridge Priory was originally a hospital founded 1189-99 becoming an Augustinian Priory in 1218. Dissolved 1538. [See Illustration Card] (3)

There are now no remains of the priory. The footings of stone walling have been encountered from time to time at the southern end of the garden but none are now visible. The 14th c. capital could not be traced but the coffin lids noted
by Heales are lying in the garden. (4)
