More information : [TQ 22205513] Mound [T.I.] (1)
This is a flat-topped mound in the grounds of Walton Place [a 13th c. manor house]. It is suggested to be a tumulus or moot hill, measures 35 by 32 yards and is less than 12 feet high. There are traces of a ditch. Stone foundations have been found on the mound. To the south of it is a possible fragment of a moat, called Court Ditch. (2)
[See illustrations Card] A Norman motte. (3)
Scheduled as a Castle Mound. (4)
There would seem little doubt that this feature as described by Stebbing, is a castle mound. Court Ditch is now dry and partly rubbish filled: it is of doubtful antiquity. The 25" A.M. survey has been amended. (5)
See illustrates Card for Panoramic view. No change. (6)
