Monument Number 399069

Hob Uid: 399069
Location :
West Sussex
Mid Sussex
Poynings
Grid Ref : TQ2560510700
Summary : An extensive settlement and field system dating to the early Romano-British period, surviving as degraded and confused earthworks in a field of pasture immediately south-west of Devil's Dyke hillfort. Trial excavation in 1935 revealed a circular, levelled area circa 9 metres in diameter, interpreted as a round house. Associated with the domestic building were seven refuse pits containing oyster shells, pottery sherds and coins. These indicated that the farmstead was in use around the period of the Roman occupation (AD 43).
More information : Excavations in 1935 revealed an "IA farm", the coins and
pottery of which seem to indicate occupation just before and just
after the Claudian invasion. (See illustration card for plan). (1)

Site 'A', (TQ25751094) consisted of a 'circular hut site',
surrounded by a shallow ditch, associated with pits. Site 'B'
(TQ 25601065), consisted of 7 pits, some of which contained
pottery; one also contained two coins (Epaticcus & Claudius),
and another, a coin of Marcus Aurelius. (2)

No visible remains. The site lies on open turf-covered downland. (3)

Scheduled. (5)

TQ 2569 1072) Extensive Romano-British settlement and field system surviving as earthworks in pasture immediately south-west of Devil's Dyke hillfort (TQ 21 SE 3). The earthworks appear to have been slightly degraded by historic ploughing and have been further confused by 19th- and 20th-century golf course earthworks. The test pits excavated in 1935, which recovered Romano-British material, appear to have encountered individual elements of this. (6)
