More information : (TQ 28071506) Roman Villa (R) (site of) (1)
A Roman pavement with a hypocaust at its southern end was uncovered in 1857-8 approximately a foot below the ground in a field about 1/4 mile NW of Danny, on the summit of some rising ground. The pavement was composed mainly of red brick tesserae, one inch square, with a few smaller ones of grey stone but without any artistic arrangement. The part traced covered an area some 80 ft by 30 ft, and was divided into rooms by flint walls on chalk foundations. Small finds consisted of Samian and coarse pottery, and an undated Roman bronze coin. (2-3)
Site rediscovered in the 1940s by B French, who found 1st and 2nd century pottery in association with the red brick pavement. Further excavations were commenced in 1950 by Hurstpierpoint College Antiquarian Society. (4)
Excavations revealed a sandstone hearth some 2 ft below ground surface, fragments of pseudo-Samian, iron work, and small pieces of tile and brick. (5)
The site is indicated by the remains of recent trial trenching at TQ 28091505. The general lie of the ground suggests a building of some size. (6)
Nothing visible on available air photos (RAF 1946 & 1948). No further excavation work has been carried out since 1952, and there are no visible remains. (7)
WS 55 Listed as the possible site of a Roman villa. (8)
