Summary : Site of a Roman villa of 3rd to 4th century date with 2nd to 3rd century corn drying ovens, with evidence for Late Bronze Age and Iron Age occupation. Site now destroyed.

BRONZE AGE: Two sites of LBA occupation:-
A: TQ 2760 0712: An "oval cooking place" in natural clay with c 3/4 cwt of pottery, charcoal and animal bones overlaid by a thick layer of pot boilers, and to the north, an LBA pot containing flint chippings etc in a small cavity in the subsoil.
B: TQ 2761 0705: At least two storage vessels in scoop cavities; two bronze palstaves and a broken winged axe were found when a water main trench was dug. A short ditch or gully contained many fragments of LBA pottery. Stray finds of the period included two barbed and tanged flint arrowheads and scrapers.
IRON AGE: Four rectangular pits (4, 5, 21 & 23) were associated with Iron Age A1 AB and BC pottery. Contents also included daub and minor finds.
C1 AD OCCUPATION EXTENDING INTO RO PERIOD: Ditches (DEF) were dated C1 BC-AD and cut by an RB ditch. A late C1 inurned cremation (BS1) was found at TQ 2759 0711. Pits 6-16, 22 & 24 (? storage pits) were associated with a possible working floor.
C2-C4 AD: A basilican villa (TQ 2751 0723) was dated C3-C4.
A series of 11 corn drying ovens C2 and early C3 were associated with ditches (probable road or field boundaries) and one was overlaid by C3-C4 occupation floors.
A RB hut floor or workshop (TQ 2762 0716) contained iron tools, C2-C3 or C4 pottery etc. Burial site 3 (TQ 2756 0711) comprised three groups of cremations. Other finds include a NE/EBA chipped flint axe. Pottery finds in Hove Museum. (3)

No trace of LBA - Ro occupation, the area occupied by housing development. Find is store at Hove Public Library (No acc nos). (4)

EA 25 Listed as the site of a Roman villa. (5)
