More information : [TQ 1584 9384] Mediaeval Coney Warren on Stanmore Common O.S. 6" MIDD 5 SE. Two "streams meet almost on the 400 ft. contour line at a point where the latter forms an acute angle. The warren lies in a SW direction (230 degrees from magnetic N) with its NW corner approximately 92 yards from the junction of the streams. The warren is rectangular in form, with quite well defined sides, ends and corners, and is surrounded by a clearly visible ditch. The dimensions are as follows:- TABULAR MATERIAL OMITTED The longitudinal axix points 22 1/2 degrees E of magnetic N.;... The Coney Warren is an isolated earthwork, and, although there are signs and records of a considerable amount of gravel digging having been carried out on Stanmore Common in the past, it is some distance from these, and appears to be on an undisturbed part of the common". TQ 1587 9381. On Stanmore Common, on a gentle slope in the angle formed by the confluence of two small streams, there is a pillow mound. It is oblong on plan measuring 44 m. in length, 9 m. in width and 0.5 m. in height above ground level.
