Summary : Medieval earthwork with associated pond-bay. Possible site of an 11th century mill. Has also been described as a possible castle. Roman coin also recovered.
More information : [TQ 1905 6347] Castle Hill. Roman Coin found here [TI] Castle Hill [GT] (1,2) An enclosure (c. 100 yds. x 30 yds.), known as Castle Hill, on the right bank of the Hogsmill. Defended on all sides, but the NW, with a rampart; there are traces of a ditch along the eastern face. [AO/LP/63/45]. (3-4) A very substantial dam (now cut at each end), crosses the stream and is possibly the site of an 11th c. mill. A Roman brass coin found nearby (5). Scheduled under Castles. (6) Medieval earthwork with associated pond bay as described, in fair condition, but mutilated on the N. side by recent building development. Published N.S.L.1/2500 and 1/1250 revised. (7)
