Summary : Medieval earthwork with associated pond-bay. Possible site of an 11th century mill. Has also been described as a possible castle. Roman coin also recovered.

Castle Hill [GT] (1,2)

An enclosure (c. 100 yds. x 30 yds.), known as Castle Hill, on the right bank of the Hogsmill. Defended on all sides, but the NW, with a rampart; there are traces of a ditch along the eastern face. [AO/LP/63/45]. (3-4)

A very substantial dam (now cut at each end), crosses the
stream and is possibly the site of an 11th c. mill. A Roman
brass coin found nearby (5).

Medieval earthwork with associated pond bay as described, in fair condition, but mutilated on the N. side by recent building development. Published N.S.L.1/2500 and 1/1250 revised. (7)
