Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 397094

Hob Uid: 397094
Location :
Surrey
Mole Valley
Capel
Grid Ref : TQ1720041300
Summary : Alleged castle. The only earthworks present are woodland boundary banks and ditches.
More information : [Area TQ 172 413] A small fosse, "the site of the
ancient castle of the Entons", is in Enton's Coppice about 1/4
mile west of Capel Street.

[O.S. 1" 1806-10 names Ewekene's Farm as Ewtons's Farm, therefore
Ewekene's Copse is probably Enton's Coppice as it is the required
distance from Capel Street]. (1)

A perambulation of Ewekene's Copse revealed nothing more than
a complex of woodland boundary banks and ditches.

A trench cut the length of the copse by S.E. Electricity Board
engineers revealed nothing of interest. (2)
