Summary : A Roman milestone inscribed to Constantine the Great (307-337) was found with Roman pottery, (including samian), brick flue and roof tiles and possible building foundations in 1901. Listed as a possible Roman villa site.

(TQ 13300279) (3) Roman milestone inscribed to Constantine the Great found with Ro flue tiles, brick fragments, roof tile, flints which seemed to belong to flint foundations, quern, millstones, and pottery fragments including Samian ware in 1901 in a piece of land adjoining Herschel Lodge, on the east side of the Avenue, 300 yds or more from the high water line of the coast. Stone in Lewes Museum, presented by T E Sanders, on whose property it was discovered. Herschel Lodge stood in the NE angle of the junction of Grand Avenue and Landsdowne Road (3). (2-4)

The site of Herschal Lodge at TQ 13300279, as given by Authy 3 verified from Kelly's Directory 1914-5. The milestone and building fragments etc were found at the OS 6" 1913 site, "Roman pottery found AD 1905". No recent finds have been made. The milestone is still in Lewes Museum, and a copy is on display in Worthing Musuem. (5)
