West Horsley Place, a large private residence of considerable architectural interest and as described above. Condition - neglected and in need of repair. Reputed to have been the home of Sir Walter Raleigh who is buried in the nearby parish churchyard. See G.Ps AO/66/108/3-4.
To the N. is Lollesworth Wood, at TQ 087 535, are the remains of four dry fishponds which are probably contemporary with the Md. house.

(TQ 087535). The Mansion came into the possession of Henry VIII in 1538, a large house with numerous rooms including a hall, great chamber, great dining chamber, joining parlour and chapel. Alterations and repairs were carried out (for Henry VIII) in 1539, 1541 and 1543. (5) |
