More information : [TQ 08034092] A Roman brickworks consisting of a Roman tile kiln of the "cross-wall" type with associated "brickyard" and clay pits was excavated by R.G. Goodchild in 1936. The finds included Roman brick, roof tiles of tegula, imbrex and pear-shaped type, flue-tiles and tesserae. An almost identical kiln at Hoheneck in Germany dates to A.D. 100-150. Material in Guildford Museum. (1)
The site, within a pasture field, is marked by a dense scatter of tile debris centred at TQ 08034092. (2)
SY 13 Listed as the possible site of a Roman villa, though possibly part of the estate of the villa at Rapsley Farm (TQ 04 SE 12). (3) |
