The Burgh

Hob Uid: 393222
Location :
West Sussex
Horsham, Arun
Amberley, Burpham
Grid Ref : TQ0479011220
Summary : A bowl barrow situated on a chalk spur which projects from the southern edge of the Sussex Downs. The barrow has a roughly circular mound, about 15 metres in diameter and 1.7 metres high with a central hollow indicating part excavation at some time in the past. Find recovered from the monument include ashes, bones, a small Middle Bronze Age urn, and fragments of a larger vessel which are now in Brighton Musuem. Other finds include a mass of bronze, portions of Roman flue tile, fragments of Roman pottery, piece of imitation Samian, and fragments of Bronze Age type pottery. A fragment possibly of Early Bronze Age pottery usually associated with unburnt burials was also found, and it is suggested that the original interment was unburnt Early Bronze Age. Scheduled.
More information : (TQ 04801122) The Burgh (TI) TUMULUS (GT). (1)

The Burgh, a bowl barrow 18 paces diameter, 6ft high, and with a
hollow centre, has been dug into on several occasions and ashes,
bones, a small MBA urn, and fragments of a larger vessel found
are now in Brighton Musuem. Reginald Smith suggests that the
fragments may be late Saxon. Other finds include a mass of bronze,
portions of Ro flue tile, fragments of RB pottery, piece of
imitation Samian, and fragments of BA type pottery. A fragment
possibly of EBA pottery usually associated with unburnt burials was
also found, and it is suggested that the original interment was
unburnt EBA. (See AO/F/52/139). (2-3)
