More information : [TM 4502 9326] Remains of [T.I.] PRIORY [G.T.] (Benedictine) (1) Aldeby Priory: Benedictine. Fd. c. 1100-35 Diss. 1538. Founded for a prior and three monks; three monks in 1481. The monks evidently officiated in the parochial church of St Mary, which was appropriated to the Priory, as there is no known reference to a conventual church. Historical Account. (2-4) Priory Farmhouse and outbuildings: two-storeyed, brick and flint, pantiled. Outbuilding brick flint and pantiled with mediaeval buttresses on west. Mediaeval doorway in house. 15th c. and later incorporating remains of the Priory. Grade 2* (5) The Priory, or Priory Farm: a two-storeyed oblong building with pantiled roof, high brick gable ends and flint rubble walls with brick bonding courses, now almost completely cement rendered over. At the S. end of the W. wall are four brick buttresses apparently of later date. The N. end of the building is taken up by the living quarters and the S. end by a workroom with barn above the latter showing some ancient trussing. The house has been refenestrated. Although the thickness of the walls and the evidence of the Min. of Housing lists points to some incorporation of mediaeval work there is little, if any, of it visible outside. GP AO/62/72/7: W. wall from S. In 1935 when a lawn was made just off the N.E. corner of the house, some skulls were found. These were dated to the 16th or 17th c. apparently by Norwich Museum (a).
