More information : ['A' TM 2551 4530] Tumulus [O.E.] ['B' TM 2557 4535] Tumulus [O.E.] (1) A third barrow shewn at approximately TM 2551 4536 'C'. (2) 'A' There are now no traces of this barrow which has been completely ploughed out.
'B' A bowl barrow in good condition except for an old excavation trench, and pit at the centre. Turf covered with trees growing upon it, the barrow has a diameter of 21.0 m., and is 1.8 m high. Published survey (25" 1927) correct. 'C' Remains of a bowl barrow at TM 2550 4534. It has been dug away on the N and W. sides, otherwise it is in fairly good condition. The barrow was originally 15.0 m in diameter E-W by 17.0 m transversely. Its maximum height is 1.3 m. It is covered with trees. Surveyed at 1/2500. (3) Excavation took place in 1974 on sites 'A' and 'B' and on the site of a further barrow 'D' which was recognised from air photographs held by the Post Office Research Centre, Martlesham Heath. 'A'. The site of this barrow was excavated and no ditch or graves were found, but 113 flint scrapers an arrowhead and over a 1000 Beaker sherds were found giving an impression of domestic litter rather than broken funerary vessels. 'B'. This is a standing mound with a diameter of circa 25 m, and a height of 1.84 m. Work was limited to clearing out an earlier excavation consisting of a narow trench leading to the cente of the mound, which only reached a depth of 1.6 m. Three sherds, one Bronze Age, one Roman, one possibly Saxon, and a number of flint flakes were found. 'D'. TM 25494529. No trace of the mound survives; however excavation revealed a circular ditch, circa 12.5m in diameter. No graves were discovered, but two possible post holes were found within the area of the ditch and six outside the area. Approximately 100 Beaker sherds, 23 scrapers, 4 other tools and 2 broken arrowheads were recovered. (4)
