Summary : An early to mid 16th century moated manor house, altered during the 18th and mid 19th century; the seat of the Tollemache family.The present Helmingham Hall may have been initially constructed in 1510 on the site of an earlier pre 15th century house called Creke Hall. The exterior of Helmingham Hall was altered between 1745-1760, during this period a stable block was also added. In 1800 further alterations to the exterior were made by John Nash. In 1840 the garden front of the house was altered.

It falls into four periods c 1485-8, c 1750, 1800 and 1841. (2)

C mid 16th cent built by Lionel Tollemache as a quadrangle
with a surrounding moat, out of which it rises. Altered in the
mid 19th cent. There is a walled garden contemporary with
if not older than the present hall, also surrounded by a moat.
Grade I. (3)

Helmingham Hall and its surrounding moat are as described in the
attached leaflet "Some Notes on Helmingham and the Tollemaches".

The moat around the garden area to the SW of the Hall
appears to be ornamental.
