More information : [TM 14654859] The Island [T.I.]. (1)
90.0m. SW. of Rise Hall farmhouse is a small, nearly square, raised mound of earth, 14.0m. across, 0.3,. in height, which has been formed with the spoil from a ditch which has been cut into the natural westerly ground slope, and which encircles it except on the west, downhill side. There are small fragments of a probable retaining bank here.
The ditch is waterfilled, but only marshy on the east side. There are traces of a causeway midway along this side. The feature is in fair condition.
The date and purpose of this earthwork is obscure. The farm owner's wife says that the feature appears on all old maps as 'The Island', and can give no further information about it. Published survey (25" 1927) revised. (2) |
