More information : [TM 06524915] OFFTON CASTLE [LB] (Site of). (1)
Offton Castle. A square area with an abrupt escarpment 14ft above the water, is surrounded by a moat 35ft in breadth: to the E of the entrance on the N the moat narrows to 28ft, apparently by the subsidence and consequent spreading of the mount at this point. On the S side of the exterior of the moat are evidences of another embanked field enclosure. This feature has the appearance of an early befossed mount adapted to the later medieval defence.
Classified under Mounts (Class D) = forts consisting only of a mound with encircling ditch of fosse. (2)
A homestead moat, water-filled and in good condition. No trace of any building was seen within the enclosed area which is raised about 2.4m. above the surrounding ground and apart from several field lynchets no other embanked features were noted.Published 1/2500 correct. (3)
