More information : (TL 912881) Earthwork in a small mere on East Wretham Heath, (see plan) 440 yds NE of Ringmere and 123 yds south of 'Drove' road, was revealed after the lowering of the water level. Partially excavated by H Tyrrell Green and R R Clarke in Dec 1934, when two possible post holes were discovered, but no material indicating purpose or date. Plan. (1-2) TL 91278814. A small circular bi-vallate earthwork situated in an open, (but secluded topographically) position on Wretham Heath circa 35.0m above sea level but in an area with a high water table; The Heath now falls within a nature reserve and the work is preserved. The monument comprises double parallel banks, both with outer accompanying ditches; there is a suggestion of a causeway across the outer ditch with a complementary slight lowering of the outer bank in the south-west quadrant, but the inner complex is complete throughout. The excavation of 1934 cannot be identified. The work measures overall a maximum of 37.0m and is almost circular; the banks have a maximum height of 0.4m whilst the ditches average 0.3m in depth (see section on AM); the central flat undisturbed area has a diameter of 12.0m. There is much recorded, and visible, evidence of prehistoric activity in this area but the monument is too unusual to date with any certainty. Divorced survey (1:2500) on AM. (3)
