More information : (TL 97886769) Moat (NR) Mill Hill (NAT). (1)
A small mount surrounded by a moat to the SE of Hunston. Mill Hill (name verified) an earthern mound overgrown with trees, 1.5m high, surrounded by a square ditch, previously water-filled but now dry. It is visible on all but the E side, where it is destroyed by tipping. The ditch appears to be cut into the base of the mound, and is almost certainly a later homestead moat. The mound is mutilated by an excavation hollow in its centre 0.8m deep. The purpose of the mound cannot be ascertained. It is situated on a low ridge and may be a barrow; alternatively it may have been a motte. The name suggests it was used as a windmill stance. (2) |
