Summary : Ealdorman Aelfgar left a bequest to the monastic community at Stoke-by-Nayland (will dated 946-51). King Edgar granted land at Stoke, perhaps including the monastery, to Ely in 970. The whereabouts of the monastery is unknown, but may be on the site occupied by the 19th century Stoke Priory House, (TL93SE33).
More information : [Marginal] "Stoke by Nayland. Norse monastery; site
unknown; founded by ealdorman AElfgar (or in Hadleigh?)". (1)

Stoke-by-Nayland Saxon Monastery.
Earl Alfgar, who lived during the time of King Edmund (who died in
948) is considered the founder. All traces of the monastery have
disappeared though Stoke Priory [see TL 93 NE 33] is said to occupy
the site. (2)

There are no traces of a monastic building at Stoke Priory. The
owner was away at the time of the visit, and no further information
has been obtained about this site. (3)
