More information : (TL 84265997) Hawstead Place (NR) (Site of) (NAT) Moat (NR) (1) Date of original house not known, rebuilt temp Hen VII or VIII probably by Sir Wm Drury on the site of the old house within the moat. (2) The present house (outside the moat) is 18/19thc. It has a pair of brick gate piers with initials referring to a marriage in the chapel of the house in 1675, therefore probably of that date. There is a 14th/15th cent stable. Grade 2. (3) The waterfilled moat is lined with bricks probably of the Tudor period and the collapsed bridge remains are also brick. Examination of the island for remains of a house was not possible. To the south strung down the hillside a range of five (now four) ponds, probably a fish nursery to stock the larger ponds to the NE of the moat. Of the four, the northerly has been filled in, the next, which was dry, has been cleared and re-filled and its dam repaired and re-scarped. The other two are, apart from the water level, in an original condition. The stable at TL 84195989 was according to the farm manager built with materials from Burg Abbey so is probably 16thc. It is a hotch-potch of brick and stone with modern brick where damaged by bombing. Piers at TL 84195992. See annotated 25" survey. (4) No change since survey of 5 3 70. (5) TL 843600. Site of Hawstead Place and associated fishponds - scheduled. (6) Hawstead Place, (name confirmed). The present house, moat, stable and ponds are generally as described, and there is no change to the published survey. According to the owners, a statue (GP), which is not in situ, at TL 84285994 was erected at Hawstead in 1578 to celebrate the arrival of Elizabeth I to the Drury estates. (7)
