More information : (SD 22617394) Dalton Castle (NR) (1)

Dalton Castle is a 14th century rectangular tower of rough rubble limestone with red sandstone quoins and dressings and top parapet. The original entrance is at the south east corner, and in the south west wall is a probable early 18th century doorway leading to an internal spiral staircase. In 1545-6 the then ruined tower was repaired and used as a prison, and later as a courtroom. Internal alterations were made in the early 18th century and extensively in 1856. (2)

As described by authority 2. The south west and south east walls are ivy-covered and no structural details are visible except for the two doorway entrances. On the other two walls are several windows, partly or wholly restored; many upper windows are now bricked-up. The stone parapet is modern. (3)

Dalton Castle is a 14th century pele tower with all the windows dating from 1856, except for one two-light window in the south east wall. Grade 1. (4-5)

Dalton Castle now houses a small collection of armour and old documents. (6)
