More information : Homestead Moat at Middleton Hall. (1) Moat correct as shown on the 6". The West and North arms are dry, the east arm is wet and in use as a pond. Condition of whole - poor. (2) (TL 8699 4007) Moat (NR) (3) Traces of a rectangular homestead moat partially surround Middleton Hall and its garden. The NW and SW arms have been mutilated by recutting, and are now incorporated in the modern drainage pattern; the NE arm is widened to form a duckpond. There is no trace of the SE section. Originally the moat would measure overall about 90.0 m NE-SW by 70.0 m transversely. The interior is at the same level as the surrounding ground. Middleton Hall was built in 1864 (wall plaque), and there is no local knowledge of an earlier house. Surveyed at 1:1250. (4)
