More information : (TL 830180) ROMAN SETTLEMENT (R) (site of) (NAT) (1) An extensive area of Iron Age and Romano-British settlement, known since 1846 is in evidence at Rivenhall (most of the Roman finds could well be related to the villa and building - TL 81 NW 5). Pits containing Iron Age pottery of early types; pits, gullies and foundation trenches of rectangular timber buildings were noted during excavation of the villa in 1972 and are particularly well preserved in the churchyard where large areas of Iron Age and early Roman ground surface are preserved beneath the Roman building. Associated pottery was mainly Belgic and native coarse wares. Part of a Celtic decorated mirror was found near the church in 1848; now in Chelmsford Museum (4), and a second mirror handle was found north of the Roman villa in 1960. A scatter of worked flints mainly waste flakes of Neolithic or Bronze Age date came from the area. (2-4) The area is situated in a river valley, under permanent pasture. The landowner would not allow access to the land or supply any further information. (5) Rodwell refers to the corner of an Iron Age rectangular building with wall trench discovered at Rivenhall in 1971 (presumably refers to Authy 3 discoveries). (6)
