More information : (TL 70259601) St Mary and St Giles's Priory (NR) (Site of). (1) Cluniac cell at Slevesholm dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and St Giles, was granted by William de Warenne in 1222-6(a), or in the reign of Stephen (3), for a prior and 1-2 monks. Dependent on Castle Acre, it became denizen 1351-74 and was finally dissolved in 1537. (No further information in ONB) (2-3) There are no physical remains of this House at the formerly published site which is now under plough; farm workers questioned had no knowledge of early finds or foundations. To the south of the modern east-west road which is adjacent to the site, the fields exhibit many pits, undulations and irregularities - all now under pasture and trees. The impression is of early quarrying no recognisable pattern is evident and there is no surface trace of building material. Inspection of OS APs (flights of 1971 and 1975) negative. The tithe award of c1839 shows no significant detail. (4) |
