Summary : An alien priory cell for Benedictine monks of Bec Hellouin at Stoke-by-Clare was dedicated to St John the Baptist. It was founded in 1124 after being transferred from Clare Castle and was converted into a secular college in 1415. It was dissolved in 1548. The present Stoke College, (TL74SW72), now a school, is largely 17th and early 18th century but incorporates parts of the Benedictine priory, including the chapel and kitchen. The Church of St John the Baptist, (TL74SW48), served as the priory church. |
