More information : TL 65814577 Castle Farm on Site of (NAT) Haverhill Castle (NR) Moat (NR) (1)
The site of Haverhill Castle was on high ground, its south east scarp and ditch were preserved until recently, but now can only be traced byfencing and part of the ditch 12 ft deep containing water. Position occupied by Castle Farm. (2)
The only trace of Haverhill Castle is a slight ditch at the south east. Castle Farm is now pulled down. (3)
There are references to a 'castle' at Haverhill in 1373 and 1403, but an examination of the earthworks known as Haverhill 'Castle' indicate that it was a fortified manor-house and there is no sign of a mound. The moated area is oblong and much mutilated. (4)
No surface evidence of this feature now remains. The site, on a high plateau giving commanding views in all directions, has been landscaped and is used as a school playing field. (5)
