Site of a Roman winged corridor villa, probably dating from 2nd to 4th century AD was discovered in 1826 and excavated in 1840s and 50s when a bath suite, mosaic, tesselated pavements and painted wall plaster were found. Infant burials and a cremation were also found. The site is marked by a surface scatter of building debris. Excavations in 1990 in advance of a pipeline uncovered a range of buildings c.50m from the villa, they were dated to the 2nd-3rd century AD.
