More information : (SD 14928099) Stone Circle (G.T.) (1)
The stone circle to the south of Lacra, excavated July 1947, is 48 ft in diameter, and consists of six stones averaging 3 ft 6 ins high. It probably originally consisted of eleven evenly spaced stones. There was an inner ring of stones enclosing a central mound, diameter 32 ft height 2 ft. In the centre of the mound were large stones with fragments of burnt bone beneath them. There was no trace of the primary burial, or pottery. Charcoal was found both at the periphery and the centre. The mutilated state of the burial circle was accounted for by ploughing in the 19th century. (See Illustration Card). (2)
Correctly described. Published survey (25") revised. (3)

The monument is as described above and no survey was undertaken. A seventh stone, inside the circle is probably one of the large stones in the central burial mound which was uncovered during the excavation (see authority 2). (6)
Five of the stones that are thought to have comprised this stone circle are visible on air photos. (7-8) |
