More information : (TL 41173288) Hale Hill (NAT) Moat (NR) (1)
An alleged moated tumulus at Hales Farm (2) visited by Holmes who classified it as a small Medieval castle mound consisting of a square moat and pyramidal mound with a small square summit. Holmes further stated that it was definitely not a barrow, Roman or any other period (3). (2,3)
Hale Hill (name verified): a tree planted mound within a rectangular moat measuring overall 24.0m NW-SE by 28.0m transversley with waterfilled arms c 6.0m wide. The mound has a rectangular base c 16.0m by c 12.0m and rises to an oval top c 3.0m above the water level. The centre is depressed and c 1.0m deep. There is no evidence of a causeway across the moat, which appears of equal significance to the mound. Situated as it is next to the Rectory suggests it belongs to that rare class of small moats known as "Vicars Moats". (4) TL 412328. Hales Farm. Square moat enclosing a pyramidal mound. Doubtful castle. (5)
Listed by Cathcart King as a motte. (6)
