More information : The Priory Cell of St Michael of Salburn (Salbourne) in Standon was established between 1173-78 by Richard de Clare for monks of Stoke by Clare (Alien Bebedictine) in a hermitage (originally built by William the Anchorite who continued to dwell there and was succeeded by other hermits). After 1306 it appears to have reverted into a hermitage or chapel, for Benedictine or secular priests, till 1415 when it came under Stoke College, and eventually belonged to St Edmund's College, Old Hall Green, where a property owned by them called 'The Hermitage' (TL 370 221) may mark the site of the original hermitage. 'The Hermitage' is a small brick constructed cottage now pebble dashed with a red slate roof and modern doors and casements. Although fairly old the fabric is certainly not that of the original hermitage; whether this is the original site cannot be determined. The adjacent ecclesiastical college is in recess and information was not available. (5) |
