More information : (TL 3695 0395) Site of (NAT) Cheshunt Priory (NR) (Benedictine Nunnery) (NAT) (1)
Founded for Benedictine Nuns in 1183, it contained 13 nuns in 1290. Four nuns left when it was dissolved in 1536.
The site was bounded on the E by the River Lea, on the W by the railway, and on the S by a line of electric pylons. Finds consisting of human remains, tiles and pottery from here are in the Public Library. Excavation by a gravel company has resulted in much of the site being filled with water, although the greater part of the foundations have not been touched. The last visible remains were taken down early in the 19th cent (5). (2-5)
No visible remains. The area has been dug for gravel and subsequently used as a rubbish tip. (6) |
