More information : (TL 39 76 0829) Nether Hall (NR) Moat (NR) Watch Tower (NR) Tower (NR) (1) The remains of Nether Hall comprise the gatehouse, angle towers and part of the curtain wall, skirted by a moat revetted with brick on outer side. It was probably built in the late 15th century and dismantled in the second half of the 18th century. A good example of a fortified brick manor house. Grade 1. (2-3) Nether Hall (name verified locally) is as described by the RCHM. The ruins of the gatehouse towers on the S side survive almost to roof height. The NnW and SE octagonal angle turrets survive to c4.0m in height, the SW to c1.5m above the level of the moat, and the NE is almost completely destroyed. The curtain wall is about 4.0m high on the S side, but elsewhere it is reduced to an average height of c 0.8m. Nothing remains of the house within the central area, which is overgrown with nettles and trees, but a 17th century engraving held at Netherhall Farm shows the house built against the N curtain wall. The rectangular moat, c 10.0m wide and enclosing an area c 50.0m N-S by 30.0m E-W, is still water-filled. See ground photographs. Published survey (25") revised. (4)
