More information : (TL 232162) ROMAN SETTLEMENT (R).(1) A considerable number of Roman finds in the Welwyn area over a number of years indicate the presence of a major Roman settlement here. (See map diagram). A Roman building has been found at the Manor House (TL 21 NW 6), a villa at Lockleys (TL 21 NW 2) and a bath house and other buildings at Dicket Mead (TL 21 NW 20). An extensive burial ground was found at The Grange (TL 21 NW 4). It is likely that the settlement was occupied from the 1st to the 4th century AD. (2-5) No further information.(6)
Gazetteer and bibliography of the findspots of Roman material from the settlement. The lack of structural evidence from within the Mediaeval and modern built-up areas suggests that the nucleus of the Roman settlement was probably outside the modern town centre, probably between the known Roman building at The Manor House, (TL12NW6), and the findspots of Roman material at the gravel pit (TL21NW&), ie ca.TL227164. This location for the Roman town centre would place the known areas of the Roman cemeteries and industrial activity outside the walls, (as would have been the case).(7)
