More information : (TL 1655 9835) Stone (GT) (1) The "AS" wayside cross at Longthorp, removed "for safety" into a cottage garden a few yards from its probable original site at the junction of the two roads, has a shaft remaining that is 6' 6" above the socket-stone, and one side covered with interlacing strap-work which is almost invisible in its present position. Leaded into it are the remains of iron bolts, suggesting that the cross had once formed part of the village stocks and whipping-post. (2) "Plaitwork" and vertical roll moulding at each angle noted. No date given. (3) Shaft and base now situated at TL 16559835. Description of previous authorities correct; decoration is now visible on one face only, the remaining 3 faces show indications of having been "rubbed down", probably a deliberate act to remove the early designs; the roll moulding is clear. The monument is possibly a late Saxon/Anglian shaft later retooled, inserted into a square base and subsequently used as a whipping post (the bolts being at the requisite height and position for hand gyves). See photograph. (4)
