ST NEOTS PRIORY

DESCRIPTION + /

Benedictine Priory founded in 972-5 as a dependency of Ely and damaged in 1010. It was refounded to the Benedictine order in 1082, the Ely monks being expelled and replaced by monks from Bec-Hellouin, to which it became dependent. It gained independence in 1412 and was dissolved in 1539. Excavations have identified the site of the Priory and its graveyard. Saxon pottery and sceattas of the 7th-8th century have been recovered from a ditch under the monastic foundations. The site is scheduled.
